Annan to Meet Putin on Syria |
17 July 2012The international envoy for Syria Kofi Annan is to hold talks on the Syrian crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Annan is in the Russian capital trying to get Moscow to back stronger action against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad over the bloodshed in Syria, now into its 17th month.
On July 16, Annan met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said Moscow would block moves at the UN Security Council to extend the UN monitoring mission in Syria if Western powers did not stop resorting to what he called "blackmail" by threatening sanctions against Damascus.
His comments came as rebel fighters fired grenades at tanks and troops while regime armor shelled Damascus neighborhoods. Syria's rebels announced the launch of a full-scale attack operation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations said its humanitarian response in Syria was facing a critical shortage of money.
