PES Leader Stanishev Firmly Supports Embattled Romanian PM |
12 July 2012Party of European Socialists (PES) president Sergei Stanishev has declared full support for Romania's left-wing government that has been criticized over its move to get rid of the country's President Traian Basescu.
Romania is going through constitutional trouble as the socialist-liberal majority in Parliament supporting Ponta's cabinet has launched an impeachment procedure against Basescu for allegedly overstepping his powers.
On Tuesday, Basescu temporarily stepped down, transfering powers to Senate President Crin Antonescu, until an impeachment referendum is held on July 29.
The European Commission has stated it is "concerned" with developments in Romania and EC President Jose Manuel Barroso has invited Ponta to Brussels Thursday to discuss the matter.
In a joint press conference with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta in Brussels, Stanishev condemned the "hypocrisy and opportunism" of the European conservatives who have expressed their concerns over the political processes in Romania.
"Victor Ponta is simply redressing the democratic imbalances that have taken place under the previous Government. His commitment to the highest democratic standards is clear," Stanishev, a former Bulgarian PM, declared on Thursday.
"Victor has already indicated his willingness to immediately ask the Romanian Parliament to implement, were the European Commission to make any recommendations," he pointed out.
Regarding statements on the issue made by European right-wingers, particularly by members of the European People's Party, Stanishev stated that; "their ill-informed comments have been out of order. They have used tabloid and thuggish language and, what is worse, they constitute an attempt to stifle the hopes of renewal and justice in Romania". |
