12 July 2012Turkish dailies covered in their Thursday editions a traffic jam and maintenance work in Istanbul's FSM bridge over the Bosphorus, and developments over a Turkish military plane which was reportedly downed by Syria last June in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the 17th anniversary of Srebrenica massacre and the memorial ceremony for the victims.
Several Turkish dailies pointed out to the maintenance work over the Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) bridge which caused a heavy traffic jam, stranding drivers for hours on road. Daily MILLIYET said Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality set up a crisis management desk in order to reduce the traffic jam to a minimum. The daily said the FSM bridge was calm in early morning hours on Thursday. The bridge, one of the two that link Istanbul's Asian and European sides, is under maintenance for the past 23 days.
"Plane Puzzle", daily ZAMAN headlined over the Turkish military reconnaissance plane that went down on June 22. According to a statement released from the Turkish General Staff, no traces of explosives of inflammable were found on parts of the wreckage which have been retrieved so far. "How come did this jet come down then-" daily RADIKAL headlined. The daily said the Turkish General Staff added a new dimension to the debate by using the phrase "the Turkish jet which Syrian officials argued that they had shot down." The daily cited Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying that the Turkish jet was shot down 13 miles off the cost of Syria and the plane immediately lost altitude and speed after getting hit and crashed to the sea some 8.5 miles off the coast of Syria. "Once all the parts of the jet come out, we will see if it was a missile or anti-aircraft gun," the daily quoted Erdogan as saying.
"Genocide was cursed," daily CUMHURIYET headlined, and daily ZAMAN said, "Srebrenica pain is still alive after 17 years," over the Srebrenica massacre and the memorial ceremony which took place in Potocari memorial cemetery on Wednesday. More than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were massacred in Srebrenica during the war in Bosnia, on July 11, 1995. Following formal ceremonies, 520 coffins were laid to rest at the memorial cemetery. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag represented Turkey at the ceremony. He said, "Srebrenica is the place where racism and remorselessness turned into brutality." |
