9 July 2012Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Monday issues developments over the Syrian-downed Turkish RF4 military reconnaissance plane, killing of a Turkish soldier in a land mine blast in southeast Turkey, and Ankara's new reported strategy to stop PKK terrorism.
Almost all papers wrote about the deep-sea research vessel Nautilus whose video footage is hoped to shed light on how the Turkish military jet was shot down by Syria on June 22. Daily Turkiye said that the research vessel had taken 52 hours of images and retrieved chunks of the plane's wreckage. Meanwhile, Daily Vatan mentioned that the Turkish jet had an anti-missile system which was installed in 2009 that would warn pilots of any incoming ground-to-air missiles.
Another prominent topic that made the headlines in Turkish dailies was a new strategy by the Turkish government against terror. Daily Sabah said the new "Lay down arm or move to Iraq" strategy constituted the fundamental starting point of Ankara's new approach to force PKK to lay down arms or push PKK terrorists to deep into Iraq as early as 2014 to make Iraq's north a safer area, Sabah said.
Dailies also wrote about the killing of a Turkish soldier by a land mine blast in the southeastern province of Tunceli. Following a terrorist attack against 5 Turkish trucks in eastern Turkey a couple of days ago, Turkish security forces waged a military operation during which the 23-year-old Turkish soldier, identified as Ahmet Dagli, was killed when he stepped on a land mine, wrote daily Hurriyet. |
