6 July 2012Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Friday issues retrieval of bodies of two Turkish pilots of the military jet shot down by Syria, meeting between head of Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Gormez and Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew and release demands by suspects who stand accused of various charges as part of investigations into coup plots, terror networks and criminal gangs.
Almost all papers wrote about retrieval of the bodies of two pilots of Turkish jet shot down by Syria. A statement posted on the website of the General Staff said that it recovered them from the seabed 8.6 nautical miles from the Syrian coast. The statement said the bodies were found at a depth of 1,260 metres near the wreckage of the jet which had broken up into eight pieces. It said the bodies were flown to the eastern city of Malatya where the jet had taken off from on June 22.
Another topic that was published in dailies was a meeting between Gormez and Bartholomew in Istanbul. "As the Religious Affairs Directorate, we consider non-Muslim citizens living in Turkey as an essential constituent of our country. And we believe that they have the right to educate their own children in line with their faith and train their own religious functionaries. We think that they should have the same rights which we want for ourselves in freedom of religion and faith, and freedom of education," Gormez told reporters after the meeting. Dailies quoted Gormez as saying that non-Muslim communities in Turkey should not be left in a position to seek help from other countries to educate their religious functionaries in an apparent reference to a debate over the reopening of the Greek Orthodox Halki Seminary in Istanbul.
Dailies also wrote about release demands by dozens of suspects who stand accused of various charges as part of investigations into coup plots, terror networks and criminal gangs, stating that they were seeking benefiting from a new judicial law adopted by the parliament. Most notably among them are Turkey's ex-army chief Ilker Basbug and Mehmet Haberal, whose lawyers requested from the Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court in a hearing for release. |
