Chatham House ruled round-table meeting titled as “South Eastern Europe/The Balkans: Current Situation, Challenges and Prospects” was held today at the USAK Workshop Hall with the participation of the H.E. Mr. Josko KLISOVIC, Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia.
The conference was hosted by Head of the USAK Center for EU Studies Prof. Dr. Kamer Kasım, USAK Balkans expert Muzaffer Kutlay, USAK researchers Mustafa Kutlay, Sena Hatip Dinçyürek and Oğuz Kaan Pehlivan. Ambassadors of Balkan countries as well as distinguished academicians, regional experts, representatives of various national and international NGOs and institutions were present at the meeting.
Development and regional transformation, the process of Euro-Atlantic membership, challenges encountered by the regional countries were the topics discussed on the table as well as others.
By paying attention to importance of looking at the Balkan region by several angles which pave the way for different analysis and discussions covering many aspects, speakers mainly focused on transformation of the region after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
It was pointed out the fact that the beginning of the era of cooperation and developments as well as stability in the South Eastern Balkans depends on three elements as democratic consolidation in the region, economic transition and attempts to rewrite history.
It was also indicated by the attendees that the initiative of Croatia to provide technical assistance as well as experience sharing among regional countries considering the two basic advantages of Croatia as speaking the language that is understandable for the other regional countries and having derived of the same legal order, the legal order of Yugoslavia.
Not only importance of acquiring and internalizing the values, standards and acquis of EU but also the role of the Turkey in the region is significant for the stability, transformation and prosperity of the region was stressed.
Prominent questions were related with the Turkey-EU relations and the accession process of the regional countries to EU-NATO membership. |
