19 June 2012Fourteen people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a prison in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa on Monday.
Governor Celalettin Guvenc said that fourteen people were hospitalized, and one of them was under intensive care.
"Expect these people, other inmates are in good condition," Guvenc told reporters.
Guvenc said they were investigating the cause of the fire that started at a ward where juveniles were kept.
"We had to take 60-70 inmates to the garden of the prison as other wards were affected by the smoke," Guvenc said.
Guvenc said the inmates were then taken back in the prison after everything was under control, and inmates were in good condition and there was nothing to be concerned about.
"We will enable inmates to make phone calls and meet their relatives tomorrow," Guvenc said.
Guvenc said the hospitalized included adults, and denied allegations that fire was started as a protest.
Fire broke out at the same prison early on Sunday, killing 13 and wounding five others. The fire broke out due to a row among the inmates, and it spread as inmates did not allow wardens to open doors.
