8 June 2012Turkish daily newspapers covered in their Friday editions U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's statements in the meeting of the Global Counterrorism Forum (GCTF) in Istanbul, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hitting the western parts of Turkey, a concert by Madonna in Istanbul.
Almost all papers wrote about remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Clinton at the Ministerial Level Plenary of the Coordinating Committee meeting of GCTF in Istanbul, quoting Clinton as saying that her country backed Turkey's fight against terrorist organization PKK. "In Turkey, PKK continues its long campaign of terror and violence which have claimed tens of thousands of lives. The United States stands strongly with Turkey in its fight against the PKK," said Clinton. Papers said the U.S. secretary of state also made statements regarding the situation in Syria, quoting her as saying that peace could not be achieved in Syria until Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stepped down. "Syria will not, cannot be peaceful, stable and certainly democratic until Assad goes," she said. "The time has come for the international community to unite around a plan for post-Assad Syria," Clinton added.
Most of dailies also published stories about a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Marmara Sea, stating that the earthquake was felt in all cities on the coast of Marmara Sea including Istanbul. The earthquake took place at 11.45 p.m. on Thursday, causing residents in Thrace region and Istanbul to rush into the streets. The epicenter was registered in the Marmara Sea, a few kilometers from the town of Tekirdag and Marmara Ereglisi.
All papers wrote about the concert by Madonna in Istanbul at Istanbul's Turk Telekom Arena on Thursday night. Dailies said Madonna gave an amazing concert to 55,000 fans. 1,500 security personnel were present at the Turk Telekom Arena during the show. Madonna's last concert in Istanbul was in 1993. |
