Turkey and Croatia Share Vision for Regional Stability, Croatian President |
6 June 2012Croatian President Ivo Josipovic on Wednesday said that Turkey and Croatia shared the same vision for the regional stability.
Speaking to the Anadolu Agency (AA), President Josipovic said that it was a pleasing development to see that the cooperation between Turkey and Croatia spread to the economic field as well.
Croatia has been a friend of Turkey for a long time. While we may have differences, we share the vision for the region's stability, Josipovic underlined.
Turkey and Croatia conduct lobbying activities to help south-east European countries to become members of various international organizations and in other issues as well. Our two countries make great efforts for the region's security and development, Josipovic underlined.
Peace is one of the most important values of the modern age. Everyone in Europe is aware that, unless south-east Europe has stability, the European continent will not have stability. Turkey and Croatia make efforts so that policies directed at the regional countries are just and fair, Josipovic noted.
"Nikolic's recent remarks far from European values"
Josipovic fiercely reacted against the recent remarks made by former leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic that there was no genocide in Srebrenica during the Bosnian war of 1995 and that Croatia's city of Vukovar was "actually a Serbian city".
Croatia always favors cooperation, yet the other side must be willing to cooperate as well. The new president of Serbia must show that he shares European values. His recent remarks on Srebrenica and Vukovar were far from European values, Josipovic stressed.
Bosnia's membership in EU and NATO
Touching on his country's relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina, President Josipovic said that there was no other country more important for Croatia other than Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Two-third of Bosnia-Herzegovina's borders are with Croatia. Bosnia's membership in NATO is crucial, membership in both NATO and EU will positively affect the economy of Bosnia-Herzegovina. We will support Bosnia's membership in NATO and EU at every platform, Josipovic noted.
Trial of war criminal Ratko Mladic
Josipovic, also a former expert adviser for the court established in the Hague for the trial of war crimes in former Yugoslavia, said that the trial of former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic was important for justice.
The trial of Mladic is crucial so that the genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity, the siege of Sarajevo for 44 months and other war crimes do not repeat, Josipovic said. |
