Putin, Hollande, Want Political Solution in Syria |
2 June 2012Moscow and Paris Friday agreed to pursue a political solution of the Syrian crisis, with an emphasis on following through with UN negotiator Kofi Annan's peace plan, said French President Francois Hollande after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, DPA reported.
But Hollande insisted that a solution without the departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was unthinkable. He said Assad had discredited himself with his actions.
Putin noted that the radicalization of the situation in Syria threatened to escalate out of control. "Our goal is in reconciling the conflicting parties," Putin said. "We want to help all parties to find a political solution."
All sides must seek agreement, Putin said, sounding a similar positive theme as he did in his meeting earlier in the day in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Moscow is a close ally of Damascus and al-Assad and has resisted all efforts in the UN Security Council to pursue harder action against al-Assad. Hollande has not excluded French support for a military initiative under UN mandate. But Putin, in his meetings with Merkel, rejected such action.
On the issue of Russian objections to NATO's missile defence system in eastern Europe, Putin said Russia poses no danger to the West. He demanded guarantees, not simple promises, on the issues.
Hollande, who said he would visit Russia in the near future, announced a Russian-French commission for cooperation in economic and financial areas. |
