Azerbaijani Ombudsman Appeals to International Organisations on 20th Anniversary of Shusha’s Occupation by Armenia |

Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova has sent an appeal to international organisations in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Azerbaijani town of Shusha occupied by Armenia.
"The violation of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity by Armenia, the occupation of Azerbaijani historical lands, destruction and appropriation of the pearls of the world cultural and architectural monuments that are considered the examples of incomparable civilisation, gross violation of human rights, including the massive violation of cultural rights, which are completely contrary to the international legal norms and principles," the ombudsman told Trend in her message today.
She urged the international community including all the influential organisations to increase their efforts to put an end to Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, the politics of terror, mass violations of human rights and to support the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by peaceful means. To force Armenia to liberate all occupied territories and help hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons return home and to restore their rights.
Armenian terrorists and their patrons must be brought to criminal liability, the document says.
The message was sent to UN Secretary-General, the UN Security Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNESCO Director General, European Commission, the Council of Europe, international and European institutions of the Ombudsman, PACE, Association of Asian Ombudsmen, the International Peace Bureau, the Universal Peace Federation, ombudsmen from different countries, Azerbaijani embassies in foreign countries and embassies of foreign countries in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani diaspora organisations.
Armenian troops carried out a military operation on May 8, 1992 to occupy Shusha. Artillery shots were fired over the city which continued up to 6 pm. Over 1000 Armenian soldiers attacked Shusha from three sides.
Some 248 historical facilities, eight museums, one photo gallery, eight music schools and tens of cultural facilities lie under Armenian occupation in Shusha.
During Shusha's occupation, hundreds of innocent people died, nearly 60 citizens, including women and children were taken prisoners and are now missing. Most have not been released yet. Nearly 22,000 people became homeless. |
