16 April 2012An explosion struck near the entrance of a residential house in Makhachkala, the capital of the volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, in the early hours of Monday, investigators said.
A burned body of a man and a pistol have been found at the scene, the report said.
This is the second blast to hit the city in the past few hours. Late on Sunday, an explosive device went off near a store in downtown Makhachkala, injuring at least one woman, police said.
Dagestan remains one of the most volatile republics in the North Caucasus, which saw two brutal federal wars against separatists in Chechnya in the mid-1990s and the early 2000s. Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.
