There are reports of at least several injuries after shots were fired as hundreds of Afghans protested the burning of copies of the Koran, the Islamic holy book, at NATO’s main base in Afghanistan.

The shots were reported fired on February 22 as demonstrators set cars on fire and attacked shops on the second day of protests over abuse of the Koran.

Protests have been reported in at least two areas of Kabul, as well as in the cities of Jalalabad and Herat.

The United States Embassy in Kabul has announced its staff has been placed on “lockdown,” or with activities severely restricted, amid concerns about safety due to the riots.

The U.S. government has apologized for what officials have described as the "improper" handing of Islamic religious materials.
