Wednesday, 22 February 2012The leader of the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia has survived unharmed an apparent attempt on his life.
Russia media report Aleksander Ankvab was being driven to work in Sukhumi when his vehicle came under fire. He was not harmed, but two of his bodyguards were.
Few other details were immediately available including whether any suspects had been detained.
Ankvab was elected leader of Abkhazia in August last year after the death in May of Sergei Bagapsh who led the breakaway region from 2005.
Ankvab and other top Abkhaz officials have regularly been targeted by attacks in recent years.
Abkhazia has been recognized as an independent state by Russia and a few other nations, but most of the international community regards it as part of Georgia. |
