Tuesday, 21 February 2012ANKARA (A.A) - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Tuesday issues a report prepared by the Turkish State Supervisory Council on the late Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, an instruction sent to Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office with Special Authority to withdraw a demand to testify the undersecretary of National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew's meeting with lawmakers in Ankara, and 21 candidates running for the presidency of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
Commenting on a report prepared by the Turkish State Supervisory Council on the late Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Hurriyet, Yeni Safak, Zaman, Vatan, Radikal, Sabah and Milliyet dailies emphasized that Turkish officials at all levels failed to take steps to prevent an assassination attempt on Dink despite knowing the threat. Dailies said the report underlined that Turkish officials acted in violation of the Turkish Constitution's Article 17 and the European Human Rights Treaty's article on the protection of the right to live and their lack of act on the matter constituted a heavy public negligence. According to the dailies, the report stressed that the investigation on the Dink case was full of mistakes and errors and that it is believed the investigation did not yield an efficient result.
Dailies also highlighted an instruction sent to Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office with Special Authority to withdraw a demand made earlier to testify the undersecretary of National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Hakan Fidan. Under an amendment to State Intelligence Services and MIT Law, the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office with Special Authority send an instruction to Ankara Prosecutor's Office to withdraw a request to testify MIT Undersecretary Fidan. On February 8, an Istanbul prosecuotr ordered Turkey's chief intelligence official to testify in an investigation into an alleged urban network of the terrorist PKK organization. Hakan Fidan as well as the organization's former head Emre Taner and its former deputy head Afet Gunes were called for testimony before the prosecutor with special authority.
Dailies drew attention to Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew's meeting with lawmakers in Ankara on the new Turkish Constitution. Bartholomew gathered with members of a Parliamentary constitutional sub-committee to convey his proposals for a new constitution. "For the first time in the Republican history minorities in Turkey receive such a formal invitation to express their mind for the drafting a new constitution. Unfortunately, injustices have been made to minorities in Turkey but they are being fixed now and a new Turkey is being born," Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I told reporters after his meeting with Turkish lawmakers in capital Ankara.
Covering the race for the presidency of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), dailies wrote that 21 individuals had nominated themselves for the presidency of the TFF by February 20. Among the candidates are Besiktas's President Yildirim Demiroren and former Turkish state minister Kursad Tuzmen. The TFF will elect its new president on February 27. |
