Giorgi Targamadze Demands Immediate Release of Valeri Gelbakhiani

Valeri Gelbakhiani was arrested this morning, "Christian-Democrats' leader Giorgi Targamadze said . According to Targamadze, Valeri Gelbakhiani crossed the Georgia - Armenia border this morning with his son Irakli Gelbakhiani, though he was arrested at the checkpoint. This information was provided to Targamadze by Gelbakhiani's family members.

Targamadze said Gelbakhiani decided to arrive in Georgia because of his mother's serious illness.

According to Targamadze, they cannot contact Irakli Gelbakhiani. He said Irakli Gelbakhiani had not been wanted.

"This is political persecution carried out by the President", said the MP.

The Christian-Democrats' leader is demanding the immediate release of Valeri Gelbakhiani as he is ready to cooperate with the investigation.

Valeri Gelbakhiani was connected to 2007 coup attempt, though he had not been indicted. He had been declared wanted for refusing to cooperate with the investigation, Targamadze said.

Gelbakhiani had not been in Georgia for 4 years.
