The CIS observer mission said in its statement on Wednesday that Turkmenistan was ready for holding a free, fair and democratic presidential election due on February 12, Itar-Tass reports.
Observers positively assess “measures taken by the state bodies of power, including executive ones, and the country’s central election commission to ensure free, fair and democratic elections.”
The mission includes 63 observers representing Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine as well as the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Russia-Belarus Union State and the CIS Executive Committee.
According to the CIS observers, “the election campaign proceeded in a calm atmosphere” and “nomination and registration of candidates for presidency complied with the law.”
Aside from the CIS mission 2,300 national observers will monitor the presidential election. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe only sent experts.
The voters’ lists include around 3 million people.
Eight candidates will run for presidency in the Central Asian republic. Six of them, including incumbent President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, were nominated by public organizations and associations, and another two candidates – by initiative groups.
