A total of 56 people, including 28 civilians, were killed on Sunday in clashes between pro-government troops and protestors in various Syrian cities, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The London-based human rights organizations said only in the protest hotspot of Homs 23 civilians were killed during Sunday clashes.

The violence also claimed the lives of 28 servicemen, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The information was not confirmed by official sources.

At least 5,400 people have lost their lives in the Syrian government's crackdown on protesters since March last year, according to UN estimates. Syrian authorities blame the violence on armed gangs affiliated with al-Qaeda and say more than 2,000 soldiers and police have been killed.
