A fire has been reported at a former nuclear research center in the Russian capital, Moscow.

Officials of the Emergency Situations Ministry said there were no open flames and no threat of a radiation leak from the non-operational, 60-year-old reactor housed at the institute.

No casualties were reported.

State-run ITAR-TASS quoted an unnamed source at the institute who said by late afternoon the fire had been extinguished.

The environmental group Greenpeace Russia expressed serious concern about the incident.
