Turkey and Iraq reached an agreement on visa procedures and the opening of a consulate in Mosul during Thursday's meeting on consulate issues at the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara.
In accordance with the agreement, Iraqi and Turkish citizens who cross the Iraqi-Turkish border will be able to acquire a visa at the border gate. While visa applications will start within a month for those who have official passports, the application will begin for the others in two or three months' time.
Diplomatic sources stated that the visa application system has been accepted by Iraq, but the application will be implemented when Iraq finalizes technical preparations.
Turkey and Iraq also agreed on the opening of a Turkish consulate in Mosul. A Turkish technical delegation will go to Iraq as soon as possible to begin preparations.
Diplomatic sources also said that the Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari suggested the opening of the consulate during his visit to Turkey, and added that the Mosul consulate will be opened at the end of this year.
During the meeting, the Turkish delegation was chaired by Ambassador Murat Ersavci, while the Iraqi delegation was chaired by Iraqi Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Saad El Hayani.
Opening of the second border gate
The opening of the second border gate between Turkey and Iraq in Ovakoy dominated talks during Thursday's meeting.
Diplomatic sources stated that Iraqi officials have a positive view on the issue.
An Iraqi technical delegation will visit Turkey in July to hold technical discussions with Turkish authorities on the issue, according to sources.
Besides the opening of the Ovakoy border gate, road security, the transfer of wounded and deceased persons, and the rescuing of kidnapped persons are expected to dominate talks in July's meeting. Iraqi officials also promised Turkey that they would take the necessary measures and assist Turkey regarding these issues.
