At a meeting on February 1, 2012 Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov and Secretary Hillary Clinton expressed satisfaction with the progress Kazakhstan and the United States have made in strengthening the strategic partnership.

They renewed a shared commitment to further develop our partnership through strategic dialogues on Afghanistan, democratization, security and nonproliferation cooperation, energy, and trade and investment. They agreed that the Kazakhstan-US Annual Bilateral Consultations will become the Kazakhstan-U.S. Strategic Partnership Commission, the News Bulletin of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the US reads.

They discussed Kazakhstan and the U.S.'s common interests and efforts for a stable, secure, and prosperous Afghanistan that can promote the goals of regional economic integration and stability.

They exchanged views on the importance of democratic development and Kazakhstan's efforts to strengthen representative institutions, such as the multi-party Mazhilis, independent media, religious freedoms, and civil society.

Looking ahead to the Second Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, they discussed our joint efforts to ensure global and regional security.

To further facilitate travel between the two countries, they agreed to exchange, at the earliest, diplomatic notes with regard to the Agreements on Issuing 5-Year Visas and Unification of Visa Fees.

Finally, the Foreign Minister and Secretary discussed how to expand educational ties, particularly scientific and technical cooperation between our universities, research institutes, and in the private sector.
