Pakistan’s Supreme Court has announced that it will charge Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani with contempt for his failure to take action to reopen a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari.

"After the preliminary hearing, we are satisfied that prima facie (at first sight) there is enough case for further proceeding," the seven-member bench ordered after an intense hearing. "The case is adjourned until February 13 for the framing of charges. The prime minister will be present in person."

If convicted, the prime minister could face six months in prison and be disqualified from holding office.

The Gilani government has refused court orders to ask Switzerland to reopen a corruption case against Zardari that dates back to the 1990s, saying the president enjoys immunity from prosecution while in office.
