Thursday, 2 February 2012Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov will pay the first official visit to the United States between Jan. 30 and Feb.1, 2012. The Minister will hold talks with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries. On top of the agenda is strengthening comprehensive bilateral cooperation encompassing shared priorities of nuclear non-proliferation, regional cooperation, Afghanistan, trade and investment, energy and democracy.
Minister Kazykhanov will also hold meetings with other high-ranking U.S. officials, including members of Congress. He is scheduled to attend a number of public events as well: the Atlantic Council’s Conference on 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s Independence and 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan-U.S. Relations and a meeting with the U.S.-Kazakhstan Business Association. Coinciding with the Minister’s visit is the launch of Jonathan Aitken’s new book, “Kazakhstan: Stereotypes and Surprises after 20 Years of Independence.”
Kazakhstan-US relationship has continued to flourish since it was established two decades ago. Besides government-to-government diplomacy, the two nations are working to create favorable conditions for people-to-people ties, the driving force for an enhanced relationship in the 21st century.
The visit to Washington underscores the importance of Kazakh-U.S. partnership at the new stage of political development in Kazakhstan. Recently, Kazakhstan elected a multi-party Parliament, paving the way for a stronger rule of law and democracy.
Discussions are expected to lay the ground for the prospective meeting between President Nursultan Nazarbayev and President Barack Obama during the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul in March. |
