Wednesday, 1 February 2012ANKARA (A.A) - Turkish dailies covered on their Wednesday editions the filing of a constitutional appeal by French senators to contest a French law penalizing denial of Armenian allegations on Ottoman era incidents of 1915, a freighter ship that sank off Turkey's Black Sea coast, resignation of the head of Turkey's football governing body, a prospective meeting of Iraq's Sunni and Shiite leaders in Istanbul and Turkey's appeal to international arbitration on price of Iranian gas.
"Shock for Sarko," daily MILLIYET headlined as 77 French senators and 65 MPs appealed to the Constitutional Council for the annulment of the denial law. French President Nicolas Sarkozy's own party UMP's 52 MPs extended support to the constitutional review of the law that makes denial of Armenian allegations punishable with one-year prison sentence and a fine of 45 thousand euros. The daily said the Constitutional Council is highly likely to annul the legislation.
Daily HURRIYET said a Cambodian-flagged freighter ship sank off coast of Turkey's Black Sea province of Zonguldak as eight crew members went missing and three others were rescued. The ship "Vera" was bounded for Turkey's Aliaga port in Izmir, carrying iron.
"Resignations jolt football," daily TURKIYE said as chairman of the Turkish Football Federation, Mehmet Ali Aydinlar, quit his post along with two of his acting chairmen, Goksel Gumusdag and Lutfi Aribogan.
Daily SABAH said Turkey was set to host a meeting in Istanbul to bring together Iraq's Sunni and Shiite leaders to ease sectarian tensions in the country. The meeting at the initiative of the Turkish Foreign Ministry is set to take place late February. Turkey reportedly aims at establishing an international body that gathers different groups in the region around a table.
Daily YENI SAFAK said Turkey's state-run natural gas pipeline company BOTAS had moved to appeal to international arbitration over gas the country buys from Iran citing that gas was low quality and irregular delivery as well as higher prices in comparison to the Russian gas. |
