The diplomas received in UK universities will be regarded as invalid in Iran, member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, Hassan Ghafourifar was quoted by KhabarOnline news as saying.

Decision to stop accepting UK diplomas as valid ones came after Iran's Parliament approved a bill on November 27 of 2011 to downgrade relations with Britain to the level of charge d'affaires and limit all economic and cultural collaboration with London to the minimum level.

The bill was also affirmed by Iran's Guardian Council (GC) the following day. The move came in response to the UK's decision to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran over the allegation that Tehran's nuclear program may consist of a covert military agenda.

Following this, Iran's Ministry of Science and Technology stated that the students wishing to study in UK will not be provided with scholarships.

Ghafourifar said that diplomas of Iranian students who study in UK at their own expense, will not be considered valid.

"Students who have had the diplomas before this year (Iranian Year ends on March 21) will not have any problems," Ghafourifar added. "Those whose diplomas are dated this year and further on, are going to have problems, since the new UK diplomas will not be considered valid in Iran".
