The Customs Union countries - Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus are discussing the possibility of introducing a single currency, the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Grigory Karasin told reporters on Monday in Minsk, RIA-Novosti reported.

"We are now considering if we need a new monetary unit for the Customs Union," Mr Karasin said. He added that the issue is very important for the Custom Union members.

The Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus has operated since 2010. It aims at forming a single customs zone where no duties or economic restrictions are used, except for special protective, antidumping and compensatory measures. The Common Economic Space within the Customs Union started to operate from Jan.1, 2012.
