Denmark Throws Weight behind Bulgaria, Romania Schengen Entry |
|
|
Monday, 30 January 2012Bulgaria and Romania should be allowed to join the Schengen Agreement, Danish Justice Minister Morten Boedskov has declared.
"There are no obstacles to Romania and Bulgaria joining the Schengen system," Boedskov told a news conference at a meeting of EU justice and police ministers in Copenhagen.
Thus, Boedskov reiterated the Danish EU presidency for the two Balkan states' efforts to join the bloc's border-free zone.
It was recently reported that the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism progress report for Bulgaria and Romania due early February is expected to be negative, which would likely stall a long overdue Schengen membership for both countries.
The Netherlands remains the only member state decisively opposing the two EU newcomers' Schengen accession and is expected to maintain its stance if the report turns out negative.
Bulgaria and Romania states had to join the Schengen free movement area in the spring of 2011, and by all accounts have fulfilled all technical criteria for entry. |
