Bulgaria joins Friday many countries worldwide in marking International Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27) - a day dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of The Holocaust.

The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union Red Army in 1945.

Holocaust Memorial Day focuses on opportunities to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer, better future.

On 27 January 2000, representatives from forty-four governments around the world met in Stockholm to discuss Holocaust education, remembrance and research. At the conclusion of the forum, the delegates unanimously signed a declaration. This declaration forms the basis of the Statement of Commitment adopted for Holocaust Memorial Day.

In 2004, the United Nations voted, by 149 votes out of 191, to formally commemorate the Holocaust atrocity.

Two out of every three Jewish people who lived in Europe when Hitler was Chancellor of Germany (1.30.1933 – 5.8.1945) have been killed by the Nazi – the total number of victims is estimated at 6 million, including 1.5 million Jewish children.
