Russia, Turkey See Eye to Eye on Iranian Nuclear Program, Syria |

Thursday, 26 January 2012Russia wants a quick renewal of talks between the international community and Iran on the country's nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has declared after talks with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Moscow.
Lavrov also said that Russia supports holding the international meetings on Iran's controversial nuclear program in Turkey.
"Both Moscow and Ankara are in favor an early renewal of talks on Iran's nuclear program," Lavrov said during a visit by Davutoglu, according to the Interfax news agency.
"Turkey is actively working to resolve organizational issues (for the meetings). We want the talks to begin as soon as possible," Davutoglu said in turn.
The nations who would send representatives to meet with Iran's delegation would be the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain - and Germany, DPA points out.
Davutoglu called last week on the six-nation group and Iran to renew long-stalled talks and suggested the next round of negotiations might take place in Turkey.
EU foreign ministers on Monday announced plans to put an embargo on Iranian oil imports because of Tehran's stalwart refusal to allow international inspectors full access to its nuclear program.
On Wednesday, Lavrov and Davutoglu also declared that Russia and Turkey oppose an international military intervention in Syria and see dialogue as the only means of ending widespread violence in the country,
"Our basic approach towards Syria coincides, it seems to me. We are both against any kind of military interference from the outside," Lavrov said.
The international community needs to support reconciliation talks between the government of President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition, and the Kremlin is prepared to host the discussions in Russia if needed, he added.
Lavrov and other Kremlin officials have repeatedly declared that Russia would, if necessary, veto any United Nations Security Council resolution that might authorize the use of force by an international coalition in Syria, whose authoritarian government has had good relations with Moscow since the 1970s. |
