Thousands of Egyptians were rallying Wednesday in central Cairo to protest the military rule of the country on the first anniversary of the revolt that forced Hosny Mubarak to resign as president dpa reported

The protesters chanted "Down with the military" as they flocked to Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the anti-Mubarak uprising.

Military and security forces on Wednesday stayed away from Tahrir, which has been the scene of deadly clashes with anti-military protesters in the past two months.

There is growing demand for the military to expedite the transfer of power to a civilian administration and prosecute officials charged with killing at least 846 protesters during the revolt.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces took charge of the country when Mubarak stepped down on February 11.

The opposition has criticized the junta for its alleged involvement in the killing of around 90 people after the overthrow of Mubarak.
