U.S. authorities say an Uzbek refugee has been arrested on suspicion that he was about to travel abroad to join a militant Islamist group.

Jamshid Muhtorov, 35, was arrested at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

A U.S. Justice Department statement said that Muhtorov -- who also uses the names Abumumin Turkistony and Abu Mumin -- intended to fight on behalf of the Islamic Jihad Union, an extremist organization based in western Pakistan that seeks to replace Uzbekistan's authoritarian, secular regime with one based on Islamic law.

The statement says Muhtorov is not accused of planning terrorist acts in the United States.

If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
