Damascus has rejected a fresh Arab League road map for Syria.

State TV said the plan was a conspiracy against the Syrian people.

Arab League foreign ministers meeting on January 22 in Cairo agreed a plan that would see President Bashar al-Assad handing power to a deputy and setting up a unity government before holding early parliamentary and presidential elections.

The Arab League said it would take its road map to the United Nations for endorsement.

Earlier in Cairo, Saudia Arabia said it was pulling its monitors out of the Arab League observer mission, saying Syria had failed to fulfill any of the terms of an Arab peace plan.

The United Nations says 5,000 people have died in Syria's 10-month uprising against Assad.
