The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt is holding a reception Jan. 23 in Ankara to celebrate the first anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution that took place Jan. 25, 2011. Ambassador Abderahman Salaheldin and his wife will host the reception, which will start at 6 p.m.

Following the 18 days of angry protests, former President Hosni Mubarak resigned Feb. 11, 2011, ending 30 years of autocratic rule as the military stepped forward and pushed him from office.

“While demanding an end to the oppressive Mubarak regime, 846 Egyptian protesters were killed between Jan. 25 and Feb. 11 last year, while an estimated 6,000 were seriously injured,” Egypt’s newspaper Ahram reported.

The main reason for the uprisings was police brutality. Public fury over police abuses reached its peak after 28-year-old Khaled Said was beaten to death by two police officers in Alexandria. However, there were other reasons such as corruption, spiraling inflation, rampant unemployment and pervasive poverty.
