The Motherland Defenders' Day, celebrated in our country on January 14 is a special holiday. On this day we pay homage and gratitude to those who serve to guard the independence of the Motherland.

On January 14 greetings and gifts are given to all men who past military school, and by their very nature designed to be the protectors, and women who have bound themselves to military service.

But this year is the anniversary for our army. Established on January 14, 1992, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan passed a long way over twenty years of development, and became a well trained and equipped with modern weapons army capable to perform any combat mission and ensure security of the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the monument "Vatanga Kasamed" ("Oath to the Motherland") on January 2010 in Tashkent, President Islam Karimov said: "Paying tribute to the work done to raise our army to a new, higher level, at the same time taking into account the requirements of time, we must continue to exert all our strength and capabilities to enhance combat readiness and mobility of the Armed Forces, providing them with modern types of weapons, improve training of personnel, full social needs of military personnel and their families so that the military service has become a real trade of honor and valor."

"As the great Sahibkiran Amir Temur said: "Force can beat one, but mind and strong spirit can beat thousands." Based on this wisdom, we can say that the soldier, devoted to his country, his people, deeply conscious of the legacy of his ancestors, having firm life beliefs - is the foundation of power and the greatest wealth of our Armed Forces," the President added.

Our armed forces feel the continuing support of President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and the government. On the initiative of the President Central Asia's first Academy of the Armed Forces was established in 1995, which since then provided a lot of highly professional officers. Training of military specialists is conducted in the country by military and academic lyceums, schools for training of non-commissioned officers, military and educational institutions. They contribute to the reform of the Armed Forces, creating professional army, ready to defend the frontiers of the homeland secure and protect the peaceful life and tranquility of citizens.

As a result of the reforms, service in the Armed Forces became honorable and prestigious. Important role in this was played by the Presidential Decree "On measures to improve conditions for citizens' bearing military service in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Uzbekistan" of November 20, 2008. Spiritual and moral climate in the army and the relationships between soldiers in military units is further evidence of the effectiveness of measures to restructure the military service, development of a social protection of servicemen and their families. Over the past five years, there was a more than eight-fold increase in salaries by military ranks, severance payments upon separation from military service. Targeted programs aimed at providing servicemen with housing, medical care have been implemented. Citizens, who pass military service and received recommendations of the military command, get benefits on admission to universities.

Today, we are confident in the integrity of our borders protected by the valiant sons of our Motherland. They deserve our sincere appreciation. Let us wish health and longevity to our veterans, whose contribution in the name of peace, we must never forget! Let us wish successful service and good spirits to today's soldiers and officers!

Let anyone who has been awarded the title of defender of the homeland bear it with honor and dignity. Let our land always be peace and quiet!
