Tuesday, 17 January 2012“Perspectives on NATO Deterrence and Defense Posture” conference was held at the USAK Conference Hall under the cooperation of USAK and ELN (European Leadership Network) on 17 January 2012.
The first session of the conference has started with the opening remarks of USAK President Ozdem Sanberk. UK Former Defense Minister Lord Des Browne, Turkish Former Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül, UK Former Foreign Minister David Owen, Italian former Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgio La Malfa has attended the meeting. Apart from political leaders, there were series of academicians such as Prof. Dr. Malcolm Chalmers, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kibaroðlu, Prof. Dr. Çaðrý Erhan, Doç. Dr. Mithat Çelikpala, Dr. Saban Kardas in the conference.
Throughout the conference, the speakers mostly focused on NATO’s nuclear posture, multilateral nuclear disarmament perspective, opportunities and difficulties in NATO-Russia relations. The first session was mainly concentrated on NATO’s nuclear posture, policy and options for change as well as Role of NATO’s conventional “visible reassurances” and “territorial missile defence system”. Moreover, the second session was about opportunities and challenges in NATO–Russia relations. In this respect, methods of forward dialogue between NATO and Russia, pperspectives of NATO–Russia missile defence cooperation was debated in this session. |
