Tuesday, 17 January 2012Azerbaijan's election as a non-permanent member of the UNSC is recognition of its role in world arena, Itar-Tass quotes Russian deputy Foreign minister Gennady Gatilov as saying.
"Russia positively assesses the fact that the Republic of Azerbaijan is elected as non-permanent member of the UNSC," he stressed. Mr Gatilov noted that Russia voted for Azerbaijan in these elections and supported its candidacy.
Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo, which were elected to the organization for 2012-2013 during the elections held at the General Assembly in October 2011, assumed their authorities as the UNSC non-permanent members on Jan.1. They replaced Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria at the UNSC Council, whose two-year term expired on Dec.31, 2011.
"We had special consultation with our Azerbaijani friends and discussed the questions we will have to settle jointly. We found common approach toward virtually all of them. Our delegations in New York established quite good, constructive and useful cooperation which I believe will continue in the future," Russian deputy Foreign minister noted.
"Undoubtedly, this event will positively affect image and authority of Azerbaijan. Election of Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the UNSC is recognition of this country both in world arena and active work within the UN. It is of course a positive point which raises Azerbaijan's prestige worldwide," high-ranking Russian diplomat said.
