Tuesday, 17 January 2012Rescuers have reportedly found a body in the wreckage of an Italian cruise liner that crashed into a reef off Italy's west coast, bringing the death toll to seven.
Italy's "La Stampa" newspaper, quoting rescue workers, reported on its website that the body had not yet been recovered.
Before the body was found, the Italian coast guard had said 29 people -- 25 passengers and four crew members -- remain missing from the "Costa Concordia,"which crashed into a reef off the Tuscany coast and capsized on January 13.
The previous estimate of the missing had stood at about 15.
Marco Brusco, the Italian coast-guard chief, said only a "glimmer of hope" remained of finding any survivors, and that searches were continuing.
Reports say that about 10 Germans are feared to be among the 29 missing.
The six confirmed dead include one Italian, one Spanish, two French, a Peruvian and one unidentified victim.
The owner of the ship has alleged that the boat hit rocks near the coast as a result of a navigational error by its captain, who has been arrested by Italian authorities. |
