Monday, 16 January 2012A bill banning shale gas exploration and extraction will be discussed on Monday by Bulgaria's parliamentary committee on economic policy, energy and tourism.
The bill has been proposed by Sergey Stanishev, leader of the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, as well as MPs from the formation.
Two draft decisions on banning shale gas exploration and extraction proposed by the far-right Ataka and the conservative Law, Order and Justice will also be discussed by the lawmakers.
Several thousand eco protesters gathered in Bulgaria's capital Sofia on Saturday in front of the House of Parliament to protest against what they see as a highly hazardous technique, hydraulic fracking, that is employed for shale gas exploration and extraction.
They were joined by thousands more in cities across the country, with the more prominent being in Varna, Dobrich and Plovdiv.
In the summer of 2011, the Bulgarian government gave a permit to US fuel giant Chevron to explore for shale gas in a fertile area in the north-east Dobrich Region.
On Sunday, Bulgaria's Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov urged caution over the potential full ban on shale gas activities, pointing out the country may be doomed to not making best use of its resources. |
