The Taliban is ready to restart peace talks to end the violence in Afghanistan, the militant group said on Thursday.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the movement was working “to come to mutual understanding with the world to solve the current situation.”

However, the move did not mean “a rejection of jihad” or “the acceptance of the constitution of the stooge Kabul administration,” Mujahid added.

The statement comes after the United States said it was seeking to resume talks with the Taliban.

Marc Grossman, President Barack Obama’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai next week to confirm his agreement to the talks, an unnamed senior U.S. official told The Washington Post.

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the peace process would involve the Taliban renouncing violence, breaking with Al-Qaeda and supporting the laws and constitution of Afghanistan.

Last month, President Karzai recalled his ambassador to Qatar over reports that the Taliban had opened an office in the Gulf state's capital of Doha.
