Tuesday, 10 January 2012The US State Department in a statement said it was working to confirm reports of the death sentence against Iranian-US citizen Amir-Mirza Hekmati, dpa reported on Monday.
"If true, we strongly condemn this verdict. Allegations that Amir-Mirza Hekmati either worked for or was sent to Iran by the CIA are simply untrue," it said.
Hekmati, arrested in Iran on charges of working as agent for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has been sentenced to death, Fars news agency reported Monday.
"The Iranian regime has a history of falsely accusing people of being spies," the statement said, calling for his immediate release. |
