Monday, 9 January 2012Nearly three million stray dogs may end up being killed in Sri Lanka, as the country's government has lifted a moratorium on killing them.
The measure has been provoked by statistics that show some 2000 people are taken to hospital each day after being bitten.
Sri Lanka decided to abolish the destroying of stray dogs in 2006 after animal protection organizations protested against the practice. However, the country's Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena now reckons that the stray dog population has grown dangerously large.
"Clearly our new policy has failed,'' the Minister has told the local Swarnavahini TV network. "As a government, we have decided to go back to the previous practice.''
Each year, the authorities in Sri Lanka spend approximately USD 13 M to help its citizens who have been bitten by stray dogs.
According to animal protection organizations, the government's neutering campaigns have failed due to corruption and bad decisions.
