The cancellation of parliamentary elections in Zhanaozen will not influence the nationwide results, head of the Kazakh Central Election Commission Kuandyk Turgankulov said on Friday, Kazinform reported.

"There are only 50,000 voters in Zhanaozen," Turgankulov said. "Taking into account the voter turnout, there will not be a great influence on the results."

Turgankulov said that the cancellation of the elections does not violate the constitutional rights of citizens in Zhanaozen.

"The Constitutional Council did not think so," Turgankulov said. "We have taken such a decision guided by an explanation of the Constitutional Council."

The Kazakh Constitutional Council said on Friday that the parliamentary elections will not be held in Kazakh Zhanaozen due to the state of emergency introduced after mass riots on Dec. 16.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen on Dec.16 killing 16 and injuring roughly 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of physical and legal entities was destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen until Jan.31.

Parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan are scheduled for Jan.15.
