President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev submitted to the State Duma (the lower house of Russian parliament) for ratification the Border Cooperation Agreement between Russia and Tajikistan, Kremlin's press service reported.

The Border cooperation Agreement between two countries was signed on September 2, 2011.

The new agreement aims at ensuring the security of the border area between the Russia and Tajikistan.

It reflects Russia's position on several fundamental issues, the Kremlin's press service said.

In particular, it provides for the preservation of the Russian presence in Tajikistan as part of the Border Cooperation Group, the participation of Russia's representatives in upgrading state border protection and Tajikistan's operational border security, providing professional training for the staff and experts of Tajikistan's border agency, as well as cooperation in the fight against terrorism, religious extremism, illegal migration and transnational organized crime.

Russian border guards controlled the Tajik-Afghan border for more than 100 years. In July 2005 Russian border guards withdrew from Tajikistan.

When Russian border guards left Tajikistan in 2005 the two sides signed a five-year cooperation agreement that has expired this year.
