Former Chief of Turkish Armed Forces' General Staff Ilker Basbug who was arrested yesterday cannot be declared guilty without a court decision, the Sabah newspaper quotes Turkey's President Abdullah Gul as saying.

"All are equal before justice," the president stressed.

Former Chief of the Turkish Armed Forces' General Staff was taken into custody yesterday into the courtroom, where he was called to testify.

Mr Basbug is suspected of involvement in organising a campaign to discredit the ruling Justice and Development Party.

The general retired in 2010. Now his links with the so-called Ergenekon group, accused of anti-government conspiracy, are being investigated.
