Bulgarians Worry Spain May Kick Them Out of Labor Market |
|
|
Friday, 6 January 2012Spain is doing everything possible to get rid of its Bulgarian migrant workers, according to several associations of Bulgarians living in Spain.
Due to the economic crisis, only Spanish nationals are being hired and the Bulgarian immigrants are losing their jobs, the associations have alarmed.
The vast Bulgarian diaspora in Spain (150 000 people according to unofficial data, probably more than 300 000) has been severely hit by the crisis, the Bulgarian Trud daily informs.
"I have been here for many years, but this is the first time I have witnessed an economic nationalism such as this. If ten foreigners and one Spaniard are running for a job, the Spaniard will be immediately chosen," Bulgarian Reni Mladenova, who is the chair of a Bulgarian association based in Valencia, has told the paper.
The crisis has forced more and more Spaniards to accept even low-paid jobs such as mandarin picking, which used to be done by Bulgarians, Romanians and Moroccans, Mladenova has pointed out.
The new Spanish government has started cutting the social security and unemployment benefits, representatives of the Bulgarian diaspora in Spain have also claimed.
A poll conducted in July 2011 revealed that some 70% of the Bulgarians living in Spain do not consider returning to their home country.
The European Commission has said it would announce by Friday which EU member states want to preserve the labor market restrictions for Bulgarian and Romanian workers. So far, the only country that has completely lifted its existing restrictions is Italy. |
