Thursday, 5 January 2012The mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights operate in Kazakhstan (OSCE ODIHR) will monitor the situation in the Kazakh Zhanaozen city.
The OSCE ODIHR mission head Miklós Haraszti said after the meeting with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov.
"We are not visited Zhanaozen. We were in Aktau, talked with the Governor of Mangistau region, with the Prosecutor, we met with civil society representatives there. The situation is quite serious. A pass is required to go there," Haraszti said.
However, according to Haraszti, the OSCE ODIHR mission will continue to monitor the situation in the region.
"It is a small place in large Kazakhstan, but it actively affects the whole situation, conduct of parties and their capabilities," Haraszti said.
Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region on Dec.16 killing 17 and injuring more than 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of individuals and legal bodies destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen until Jan.31. |
