U.S. lawmakers have asked the State Department to investigate whether Chinese telecommunications-equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co. has violated U.S. sanctions on Iran by supplying it with sensitive communications technology that has been used for censorship, Wall Street Journal reported.

The lawmakers called on the department to "expeditiously investigate" whether Huawei violated U.S. sanctions passed by Congress in 2010 by providing technology to government-controlled telecoms that "has been used to restrict the speech of the Iranian people and the free flow of unbiased information in Iran."

Lawmakers repeatedly cited findings from a front-page Wall Street Journal story as the reason for the letter. Huawei said last month it intends to scale back its Iran business.

The Journal story cited by lawmakers details how Huawei's business grew in Iran in the wake of a pullback by Western firms following the government's bloody crackdown on its citizens in 2009 after a disputed election.

A statement from a Huawei spokesman quoted by the Journal on Wednesday said the allegations contained in the letter were "inaccurate" and "groundless," saying it complies with all local and international laws, including those in the United States.

"We remain open and transparent and continue to conduct communications with stakeholders around the world in a manner that is sincere and fact-based," the statement said, according to the Journal report.
