A powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of up to 7.0 on the Richter scale, is reported to have occurred near Japan's southeastern Isu islands.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the tremor, and Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The agency said the quake struck in mid-afternoon Japan time; 6:28 a.m. CET.

Northeastern Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami last March which left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.
