If properly educated, the young people around the world can become "builders of peace" and bring hope in difficult times, Pope Benedict XVI believes.

"I would like to underline the fact that, in the face of the shadows that obscure the horizon of today's world, to assume responsibility for educating young people in knowledge of the truth, in fundamental values and virtues, is to look to the future with hope," the Pope said during his New Year's homily Sunday.

Young people must "learn the importance and the art of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue and understanding," he stated, as cited by Fox News.

The leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics believes that young people are open to these notions but the social reality in which they grow up can lead them to think and act in the opposite way.

January 1 marked Benedict XVI's seventh New Year as Pope, with several thousand people gathering for the traditional Mass in St Peter's Basilica.
