Job Placement of Kazakh Zhanaozen Redundant Workers to End in January |

Friday, 30 December 2011All redundant workers in the town of Zhanaozen may have found new jobs by January 2012, Birzhan Nurymbetov, deputy minister of labour and social protection of Kazakhstan, said in an interview on the Kazakh prime minister's official website.
As many as 434 redundant workers in Zhanaozen applied for a job.
"Judging by rate and measures taken, I believe we can finish this process in Zhanaozen in January 2012," Mr Nurymbetov said.
In the Mangistau region, oil workers striking over wages have taken place since May. The court declared them illegal and the companies dismissed several thousand workers. Some strikers returned to work and new workers were hired. The companies said the volume of oil production may have decreased in 2011 because of strikes.
Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region on Dec.16 The riots were stopped at the Shetpe rail station on Dec. 17 Officials said 17 people were killed and more than 100 injured. Buildings and cars were burned and private and public property destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen from Dec. 17 to Jan. 5.
President Nazarbayev ordered the setting up of a government commission to investigate Zhanaozen's events. He also ordered action to solve the problem of 1800 redundant workers and to place them in a job as soon as possible. |
